For nearly 20 years, Green Day has been familiar to MTV viewers, and now the network is set to air a behind-the-scenes special about the band’s new Broadway musical American Idiot, according to Variety. The special Green Day Rocks Broadway is scheduled for an April 16 premiere ahead of Idiot’s April 20 Broadway opening at the St. James Theatre.
The special will not be a full broadcast of the entire show, as MTV presented with Legally Blonde in 2008 (followed by a reality show casting the next Elle Woods). However, it will offer fans many preview clips of American Idiot.
Based on Green Day’s album of the same name American Idiot follows the story of three young friends as they struggle to make sense of their lives in a post-9/11 world. The cast includes Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony nominee Stark Sands, Michael Esper, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Christina Sajous, Mary Faber and Tony Vincent and is directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer.
